Someone has asked....

I just graduated college and I'm overwhelmed by all the possible directions I could go. Every time I try to focus on one goal, I worry about missing out on other opportunities. How do you pick just one thing to focus on when everything feels important?

This is the classic double-edged sword: it’s great that you have so many interests, but it can definitely feel overwhelming to consider so many choices, especially if you’re fresh out of school. Here’s three things we think about to mitigate some of that “fear of missing out on other opportunities”:

  1. Focus on knowing yourself first. You may not know exactly what you want to do right out of school, but you likely have some sense of how you want to do it. Do you like group projects or solo work? Do you prefer administrative or process-oriented tasks, or do you prefer to be the idea person? Are you competitive or less so? There’s a ton of things that you likely already know about yourself that can help you narrow down the best next step for you.
  2. Nothing is set in stone. We often trick ourselves into thinking that every step we take in our careers must be exactly right. But the truth is that we can change our minds anytime. Make the “most right” decision for you today, and if things change in the future, you can always adjust your plans.
  3. Remember that your career is long and you’ll have plenty of time to try a variety of things over the years. Don’t put too much pressure on any one decision; your career is the sum of many decisions over time.

Rooting for you!
