Someone has asked....

Just got blindsided with layoffs at my startup - after 5 years of grinding, late nights, missing weekends, and "being a team player." Found out through a freaking Zoom call with 200 other people. Severance is a joke, and my stock options are worthless paper now. I've got maybe 3 months of runway in my savings, and now I'm seeing layoffs everywhere in tech. What the hell am I supposed to do now? How am I supposed to figure out my next move? Because right now, I'm too angry and unmotivated to even look at my LinkedIn profile.

First of all: We’re so sorry. This really, really sucks.

Second: You’re allowed to be angry. That’s a totally fair and understandable reaction, but the most important thing you do is not let that frustration derail you. Unfortunately, a lot of things just happened that were out of your control, so it’s important to remember what you CAN control in your world in the next few days and weeks. Your emotional state is probably the most important of those things.

Why does this matter so much? Emotional regulation is the foundation for growth, and without it, you’re hindering your ability to make sound, rational decisions. That said, our recommendation for the next week would be to focus on one of our favorite regulation acronyms called TIPP: Temperature, Intense Exercise, Paced Breathing, and Paired Muscle Relaxation. You can watch a quick video on TIPP here.

Once you’ve let yourself feel and process the anger, you’ll be better prepared to come up with your game plan for the future.
