BLT #31 | Feeling unmotivated?

March 20, 2025

Have you ever wanted to bring high energy and relentless ambition to your career, but you just can't seem to find the motivation? You're not alone, and we've found a strategy to help.

WE BELIEVE:

Your mindset can change your motivation.

Many folks tell us that they want to find infinite motivation in their work and their lives, but their day to day feels more like scraping by than thriving. Amy Morin, LCSW, the former host of popular The Verywell Mind Podcast and an international author, shares an interesting antidote to this issue: she thinks we should be "Playing to Win."

In short, Playing to Win is a small mindset shift that aims to conquer the task at hand, not just get through it. She shared a powerful story in this short clip that highlights the power of this mindset shift.

SOMETHING WE LOVE:

A growth mindset can help motivate.

The science is real: adopting a growth mindset can increase your sense of capability. One of our favorite studies was done with 11,000 ninth graders across the United States and tested whether a growth mindset intervention (two 30 minute activities over the course of the year) could improve the academic performance of adolescents. The findings were clear: "the intervention changed students’ self-reported mindset beliefs, their attitudes toward efforts and failure, and their views on academic challenges. [Additionally], immediately after the intervention, students were more likely to take on challenging academic tasks."

YOU SHOULD TRY:

Embracing the challenges ahead.

Do you any challenges in front of you? Write a few of them down, and then write down the positive opportunities you have by taking on those challenges. Re-read the statements each morning to naturally cultivate small doses of motivation to keep going. Here's a few suggestions to get your mind moving:

  • Find a new job | "I have a chance to connect with many new people as I look to find my next role."
  • Learn a new skill | "I don't yet know how to code, but I get to explore new tools and programs as I learn."
  • Try a new hobby | "I've never loved public speaking, but Toastmasters is a world-renowned program that might teach me some tricks to enjoy it more."
