Interviewing with a company that is a competitor to your current or former company can be tough: there are often lots of nuances to consider and it can be hard to know how much detail is the appropriate level to share. If you're in this position, we always recommend three things:
- Never bad mouth | Even if your experience at your competitor was awful, bad mouthing them during an interview doesn't help you land the new job.
- Look forward | Questions about your current or former employers are often worded in a way to try to get "the scoop" about the competition. Re-direct the conversation by answering in a way that looks to the future and highlights what you'll contribute to the company you're interviewing with.
- Keep it simple | Don't add fuel to the conversation by sharing an overly wordy answer. Keep your responses clear, concise and respectful.
