Here are three of our favorite micro actions that make a big impact on your overall motivation during your job search:
- Do one thing | If you’re struggling to find big motivation, a powerful action you can take is to just “do one thing.” Whether it’s sending one outreach email, applying for one job, or going on a one-mile walk, focusing only on the immediate next step you’re going to take helps alleviate the pressure you might feel when tackling your bigger, longer term goals.
- Adjust your schedule | Everyone has different times of day when they’re most productive and focused, yet so many of us don’t take advantage of this when we’re in unstructured phases of life such as unemployment. Think about when you feel your sharpest each day and try pulling your job search activities into those hours. If the work becomes easier to accomplish because you’re more attentive and focused, you’ll more naturally be motivated to continue on.
- Consider taking on small, part time work | If you’ve been in the job search for a while and finances are getting tight, taking on a part-time role outside of your “normal job” can actually feel really refreshing. We’ve had members pour wine at local wineries, drive for Uber or Lyft, and even pick up odd jobs listed on local sites like NextDoor and Craigslist. These jobs likely aren’t what you’re looking to do long term, but they can be really powerful ways to connect you with new people, make a little cash, and build some structure into your day. Win, win, win.
