Let's imagine you were let go from your job as part of a broader layoff. You likely weren't expecting it, and the change in your day-to-day schedule does a 180 degree turn overnight.
If you're like most folks, you might enjoy some immediate relief of not being tethered to a laptop all day, but soon enough the lack of daily structure might become more of a burden than a perk. To help mitigate the aimless feeling, here are three simple ways to reintroduce a health dose of routine to your world:
- Start the day off strong | Simple things like waking up at a consistent time, making your bed, and getting ready for the day sets a tone that you're in control of your day, not the other way around. Best case scenario, you also add some physical activity to your morning routine to help energize your body and clear your mind before you dive into job search work.
- Set a dedicated amount of time for online job hunting | It can be easy to get drawn into the LinkedIn doom scrolling when looking for work, but after a few hours a day, the rewards are usually diminishing. Instead, set a target amount of time you want to dedicate to online job searches (we recommend 3-4 focused hours max) and then supplement that time with face-to-face networking and connection moments. A well balanced job search strategy is critical!
- Engage in something fun on a regular basis | Whether it's trivia night at your local brewery, pickup soccer in the park, or checking out live music at local venues, it's essential that you keep fun activities part of your routine as a way to reduce stress, connect with friends, and help prevent job search burnout.
